NeWave was founded in 2009 by Dr. Den Burnside, an Emeritus Professor at OSU and the former Director of OSU’s ESL. Dr. Burnside is an internationally renowned expert in RF technology. The Wave platform was created at the ESL by Dr. Burnside and his colleague, Dr. Robert Burkholder. Dr. Burkholder is also a shareholder in and advisor to NeWave.
The development of the Wave antenna platform was financially supported by WNC. WNC shares a 50% interest in the Wave patent rights with OSU and has exclusive global manufacturing rights for the Wave antenna. WNC is well positioned to commercialize the Wave technology Platform of RFID solutions in Asia and has granted NeWave exclusive, commercialization rights for the rest of the world (ROW). WNC has also made a significant minority investment in NeWave which includes an ongoing technology development partnership.
In 2010, NeWave established its Innovation Center (NIC) in Plain City (Columbus), Ohio where NeWave can provide live demonstrations of numerous proprietary, wireless, RFID real-time, wireless item-level RFID solutions. NIC also serves as a NeWave’s incubation laboratory for new RFID solutions, resulting in the creation of three additional patent approvals, two patents pending and more intellectual property (IP) under development. After the Wave antenna, NeWave and WNC jointly and exclusively own all RFID IP created by either company.
NeWave has exclusive global commercialization rights outside of Asia for the Wave antenna ( 8,058,998). NeWave and WNC jointly own patent approvals for the NeWave Smart Shelf and the NeWave Autonomous Reader. NeWave and WNC also jointly own the pending patent for the NeWave Smart Inventory Management System (SIMS) and NeWave’s Smart Garment.
NeWave has partnered with Taiwan based Wistron NeWeb Corporation (WNC) to manufacture the NeWave Wave antennas and readers. WNC is one of the world's largest, highest quality and lowest cost antenna manufacturers. WNC shares the belief that NeWave Wave Platform Technology is a "game changer" for the emerging RFID industry and will enable explosive global growth in all RFID market segments, therefore WNC and NeWave have agreed to jointly own all RFID IP created by either company.

NeWave Sensor Solutions was born out of years of research conducted at The Ohio State University's ElectroScience Laboratory (ESL). The ESL is a major "Center-of-Excellence" within The Ohio State University Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering and is one of the largest Radio Frequency (RF) research laboratories in the world In fact, much of the original radio frequency research was completed by ESL for the benefit of the U.S. Department of Defense (DOD), which includes the creation of the Stealth systems. Dr. Den Burnside, the CTO of NeWave was a principle in developing the commercial application wireless research as an OSU Professor and the Director of the ESL. This experience has resulted in a unique RF understanding and revolutionary patent pending RF products that can advance RFID applications to the next level.
